Is MNS on the verge of being banned?

There are few politicians in the country who simply don't understand the basic concepts of macro economics like brand image of the country in international arena or happiness index of the society, because what they care about is their 1 lakh votes. This is the current state of MNS, a local political party in Maharashtra, India.

Rediff quotes - "The 13 Members of Legislative Assembly of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena on Monday, 9th Nov 2009, created a ruckus in the Maharashtra assembly, after Samajwadi party MLA Abu Asim Azmi started to take his oath in Hindi, in spite of their demand that all legislators take the pledge in Marathi. As soon as Azmi began taking the oath in Hindi, the 13 member-strong MNS contingent rushed towards Azmi, snatching the mike away from the podium"

Today's shameful act by MNS MLAs has not only shown disrepect to the Marathi / Indian culture but to the law and order of the country. The way our leaders of MNS behaved today in the parliament made us feel ashamed in front of the entire world but I think we should not lose hope from our country's law and order. I hope there would be strict actions taken against these MLAs and the political party. This poses a follow-up debate - Is MNS on the verge of being banned?

Raj has threatened the legislative assembly saying, "If any MLA does not take the oath in Marathi, the House will see what happens,". Is this acceptable in any economy where law and order exists. Are these guys Indian Talibans?

Some views from people I know and which I found intriguing:

  • MNS should be banned by Supreme Court and if not then PMO or President, else I will go and start shooting these street gundas
  • If action isn't taken against Raj Thackeray and MNS then we will never feel like a democracy again. If action isn't taken on this incident then how can we ever feel like the law exists
  • I love this city and we all do so how does it matter if we say Bombay or Mumbai
  • This is a cosmopolitan place and we should all be able to live peacefully together
We would love to hear your views on this shameful act of MNS...

  2. Abu Azmi should not have been beaten in the house but outside. If you can call Chennai against Madras, Kolkata against Calcutta, Bengaluru against Banglore then what is wrong in calling Mumbai against Bombay? Rather this only was/is the original name of the City.

This is not the first act in the parliament/house in India which has brought us shame. I dont support the act of MNS MLAs but statements in the blog sound biased.

4 concerned MLAs are banned. So may get the party but the voice of the people cannot be banned. More you try to dump it more violent it will get. I dont support violence it but it is natural and logical consequence. (We as a nation/human are not educated enough)

The root cause is the division of states on the basis of language. Even, Late Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar had expressed his concern that it has not done justice to the South Indian states when Hindi was chosen as the National Language of India. The stats then show that 48% of the population in India was Hindi speaking. When the proposal to choose 'Hindi' as a national language was put before the committee for the first time, no decision was taken as the votes for and against were equal 78-78. In the later round it was approved by 78 Vs 77.

If Mrs Gandhi shows respect to the nation by reading/now actually talking in Hindi....what problem does Mr Azmi have to do so in Marathi?

  3. After independence the Congress chose to divide the nation on basis of language; and hence states were divided on basis of language, with a contention that regional languages will be given significance locally. Maharashtra was formed to give importance to Marathi Language.

So now in Maharashtra you are insulting Marathi by not speaking the language you knows, then its big Gandugiri (No suitable English word found)

Such type of attitude should be curbed immediately and MNS workers did it gracefully, I am proud to be Marathi now.

But I feel pity on SS leader who did not supported the issue on punishment. We need to understand that the congress is playing British cards by dividing & rule; and hence all Marathi speaking Politicians should unite on Marathi issue at least in Maharashtra.

If you go in South and just check whether you could do the same NO!!!, why congress & their bribed media follow biased standards to Maharashtra by cursing a swadesi, & swabhasiya movement.

I hate the people who live on the fruits of Maharashtra and speak for some other language.

  4. @Blogtable - I have no issue in speaking English, Hindi or Marathi. All we need to understand is the basic definition of 'Democracy' and 'Freedom of Speech'. A person can speak in the language of his preference and his ideas should be appreciated and not the language. I guess the basic idea is to communicate and hence dividing people on the basis of caste, creed, land or religion is cheap and should not be preached. We need to understand along than being a Marathi or Gujarati, we are also Indians and have lots of national problems to tackle like border issues with neighboring countries, inflation and recession. Lets not add to the problems by fighting internally in terms of race or religion...
@Anonymous - I guess the basic fact that you are hiding your identity portrays that you are not feeling proud in sharing your views. I guess if you think hard and think of the Mughal time, you would understand that the one basic reason we lost against mughals was that our kings used to fight amongst ourselves, like Rajputana kings used to fight Maharaj Shivaji.. We were never one country that time, please don't help in dividing the country in all those terms now.. And regarding congress, I guess the election results highlighted what Indian junta really need and that's "Peace" ....
